Politically
speaking, our distribution networks are inundated with a lot of point load
connections whereby large chunk of customers have migrated to the more stable 33kV
feeders due to inadequate, poorly maintained and fragile 11kV feeders that are
very unstable. Almost all the available eleven DISCOs operate weak and unreliable
11kV networks, thus putting pressure on the existing 33kV feeders.
Since
the 33/11kV Injection stations are the retail points used by the DISCOs to
receive power supply from the transmission stations for delivery to the end-users,
they have to take urgent steps to increase the number of Injection stations and
reinforce the existing ones. The DISCOs should take conscious steps to invest
more funds into actualizing this desirous dream for the Nigerian power system
to be more stable and reliable.
Empirical evidence indicates that there are insufficient 33/11KV Injection stations and there is the need to construct more of such facilities. It is clear that between Gwagwalada and Kuje in the FCT, more stations are necessary and the existing 33/11kV Powerline Injection station in Osogbo is in need of expansion or relief. The situation across the country is similar as it is unhelpful for a densely populated area like Mararaba/Nyanya in the FCT not to have more Injection stations for effective power supply delivery.
With the recent
unveiling of 3 new feeders by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company
(AEDC), it is expected that service delivery will improve. Feelers from the
field show that Port-Harcourt Disco has a huge deficit of Injection stations
and this is capable of hindering its capacity to effectively deliver power
supply to its esteemed customers.
If
there are enough 33/11KV Injection stations across the length and breadth of
the country, service delivery will be enhanced and customers will stop the current
arbitrary migration from 11KV to 33KV lines, which will in turn safeguard
transmission infrastructure and engender a more stable and reliable power system.
Also,
having more Injection stations will enable DISCOs rearrange their network in better
and more effective ways thereby eliminating overloading of lines and transformers.
For example, load can easily be transferred from old stations like 330/132/33KV
Ikeja-West, Akangba, Egbin to relatively new stations like 330/132/33KV
Oke-Aro, Lekki, Alagbon stations. Similarly, AEDC can transfer load from
existing 330/132/33KV Katampe and Gwagwalada stations to the newly–completed 330/132/33KV
Lafia TS.
With more 11KV Injection stations,
electricity will be more available and
accessible to Nigerians, which will
then have positive multiplier effect
on the economy and quality of llife of
the citizens.
