Politically speaking, the existing human races are the white, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino and by virtue of her position, Nigeria has no choice but to be self-sufficient in electricity generation, transmission and distribution as it has a manifest destiny to lead the black race to greatness due to the fact that out of the elements of power such as economic development, military prowess, population, geography, natural resources etc, Nigeria occupies the pinnacle amongst all the black nations on earth, little wonder it is often said that out of every five blacks, one is a Nigerian.
It is indeed the hegemon amongst black nations and until she gets it right in terms of development, the black race will find it extremely hard to occupy a position of envy in the international community. The other races have nations among them that are leading in economic advancement while the rest emulate such. Among the Asian race, there are leading nations like China, India with others like Singapore, Malaysia following. Ditto for the white race that has European nations like Germany, Britain, France leading with others following. In America, the United States of America (USA), Canada lead while other nations in the continent follow. Unfortunately, Nigeria currently appears like a giant with feet of clay as she is lagging behind in electricity self-sufficiency and almost every sector that are used as indicators of development, a situation that is not inspiring to other black nations even though few like Kenya, Rwanda are trying to emerge as economic giants.
With the established fact that out of every five blacks, one is a Nigerian, the condition of blacks throughout the world will definitely improve if economic indicators used in measuring development attain positive ratings in Nigeria in terms of proportionality.
However, the envisaged improvement is only feasible if Nigeria experiences giant leap in generation, transmission and distribution of electricity as the affordability and availability of electricity is the catalyst that is needed to drive other sectors.
In conclusion, the Nigerian state both at national and sub-national levels must take deliberate and conscious steps to create the enabling environment that will attract genuine investors into the three arms in the value chain of the electricity industry. With her population, a ready market is available to utilize such energy for domestic, commercial and industrial purposes thus improving the quality of life of the people and by extension, pulling other black nations from darkness into light and economic development. Empirical evidence to buttress this claim is the fact that Nigeria presently exports electricity to neighboring countries like Benin republic, Niger republic etc under the cross border arrangement of West African Power Pool (WAPP).
